I encourage constructive comments on this journal, but I’m not only paranoid but sensitive. So, no anonymous comments! (I think anonymity can encourage abusive or malicious comments – not always, but often enough to make me dread them).

Therefore, you must register before you comment. However, I’m also aware of the possibility of scripted bot attacks (not to mention bored vandals passing by). So user-registration is moderated by me! When you begin to register, I’ll get notified by e-mail; and when I’ve had a look and decided that after all you’re a genuine human being after all, with something constructive or interesting to say – I’ll e-mail you the password.

The downside is that there may be a long turn-around occasionally. But, on the plus side, I’ll only have interested people commenting on the journal.

You might want to try out the Akismet plugin in combination with only allowing users with previously approved comments to comment. On my WP I only have two registered spambots after many months, so you could probably just manage them by hand.

Hi Joseph. In fact I wrote up a very simple little “registration moderation” plugin, in conjunction with a little design flair added by dbd-login-style. All it does is pre-define wp_new_user_notification and sends the generated password to me instead of the new user.
